If you’re like most people on the verge of getting dental implants in Springfield, MO, then you probably have this question:

How long will my implant last?

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t exactly straightforward since there are lots of factors that can influence a dental implant’s lifespan.

Check out this short guide to learn more.

What Are Dental Implants Made Of?

Dental implants are designed to last, which is why all three elements that comprise them are made from long-lasting materials:

  • Metal post: Usually made from titanium, though some can be made from zirconia as well. This element is inserted into the patient’s jawbone and acts as the artificial tooth’s root;
  • Abutment: A connector piece usually made from the same material as the metal post;
  • Dental crown: The visible part of the dental implant is commonly made from ceramic.

Dental implants are quite strong and designed to withstand the regular pressure you put on them while chewing.

Even so, they cannot last forever.

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

The lifespan of the dental implant generally depends on how well you take care of it, though some elements of the tooth can last a lifetime.

The metal post rarely gets damaged or needs to be replaced. It’s safely concealed inside the bone, so only extreme circumstances like a severe infection or a direct blow to the mouth will damage it.

The abutment is also less prone to damage, but it may need replacing because of a direct blow or other extreme cases.

The most vulnerable part of this artificial tooth is the dental crown. Usually, this part can last around 10-15 years before it needs replacing, but you can extend its lifespan through:

  • Good oral hygiene habits
  • Wearing a mouthguard if you grind your teeth
  • Eating fewer hard and sticky foods
  • Eating more fresh fruits and veggies
  • Not smoking or drinking lots of alcohol, etc.

Dental crowns can still chip, crack, or even become stained over time. Luckily, if you need to change your dental crown, the other two elements of your implant won’t be disturbed.

Dental Implants vs. Other Tooth Replacement Options

Dental implants are the most long-lasting tooth replacements compared to other procedures.

A common implant alternative, bridges, usually last around 5–10 years with the right care, and they also don’t provide the essential jawbone support that dental implants offer.

Another way to replace missing teeth is with dentures. This treatment lasts around 7 years on average, but they are only recommended for patients with severe dental damage and tooth loss.
