What should I do in a Dental Emergency?

1

Keep Calm

We understand it’s easier said than done, but keep calm. There’s no problem that we can’t work together to solve. If you are bleeding, place fresh gauze and gently press the wound. If you have a missing tooth, gently pick it up by the crown (the tooth that shows, not the root) and place it in a secure container of cold milk. If you are unsure if you are having an emergency, give us a call. It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

2

Give us a Call

Next up, give us a call at (417) 885-7040 to make an appointment. You can come into our office for same-day care. Be sure to bring any fallen dental work or your tooth if applicable.

3

Receive Same-Day Care

After coming to our office, we will conduct a problem-focused exam and determine the next steps to restore your tooth and get you out of pain. Typically, you will go home the same day with the problem solved but if you need extended service, we’ll let you know.

FAQ

Can I wait to seek treatment for a dental emergency, or do I need to see a dentist right away?

Some dental emergencies, such as a chipped tooth or mild toothache, can potentially wait for a few days before seeing a dentist. However, other dental emergencies require immediate attention, such as a knocked-out tooth, severe tooth pain or swelling, or excessive bleeding from the mouth.

It is important to address dental emergencies promptly to prevent further damage, alleviate pain and discomfort, and preserve your oral health.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

If your tooth is knocked out, it’s important to seek immediate dental care. Here are the steps you should follow before your same-day appointment:

  • Handle the tooth carefully: Pick up the tooth by the crown and avoid touching the root to minimize damage.
  • Rinse the tooth: Gently rinse the tooth with milk, saline solution, or water to remove any dirt or debris, but do not scrub or dry the tooth.
  • Try to re-implant the tooth: If possible, gently re-implant the tooth back into the socket, making sure it is facing the correct way. Bite down gently on a piece of gauze or cloth to hold the tooth in place.
  • Keep the tooth moist: If you can’t re-implant the tooth, place it in a container with milk or a tooth preservation kit to keep it as healthy as possible.
  • See us immediately: Seek dental care from your Springfield dentist as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes of the injury. The longer you wait, the less likely it is that your tooth can be saved.

It's just a tooth...Is it really important to try to save this tooth?

Yes, it is important to try to save a knocked-out tooth. Losing a tooth can have serious consequences for your oral health and overall well-being. Saving a tooth means you are preserving your natural smile, maintaining its proper oral function, preventing your teeth from shifting, and reducing the risk of bone loss.
